Best Time to Visit Meghalaya: A Month-by-Month Guide

Meghalaya rewards visitors in almost every season — but the right month depends on whether you want misty waterfalls, safe root-bridge treks, or clear valley views. Here's the honest breakdown.

Published 2 June 2026 · Dhriti Holidays

Meghalaya — 'the abode of clouds' — is one of the few places in India where the weather itself is the main attraction. That also makes timing your trip more important here than almost anywhere else in Northeast India. The short answer: October to April is the safest, most reliable window for most travellers, but the wetter months have their own rewards if you know what you're getting into.

October to March: The Classic Window

This is peak season for good reason. The monsoon has cleared, rivers have calmed down, and the state settles into cool, dry, often crystal-clear weather. Daytime temperatures in Shillong hover around 12–22°C, dropping further in December and January. This is the best stretch for:

  • Living root bridge treks (Nongriat, Double Decker) — river crossings are safe and the trail isn't a mudslide.
  • Dawki and the Umngot River — famously clear 'floating boat' water photos only happen when the river isn't swollen with silt.
  • Mawsynram and Cherrapunji viewpoints — you actually get a view, instead of a wall of mist.

December and January add a chill and occasional fog in Shillong itself, which locals enjoy but which can delay early-morning viewpoint visits. Late February into March brings the state's rhododendrons and orchids into bloom — an underrated time to visit that most tourists skip.

April to May: Warming Up, Still Manageable

Pre-monsoon heat builds gradually, with occasional early thunderstorms (locally intense but short-lived 'Nor'westers'). Trails are still mostly dry. This is a reasonable shoulder season if your dates are fixed and you can't make the winter window.

June to September: Monsoon — Not for Everyone, But Not to Be Dismissed Either

This is when Meghalaya earns its reputation as one of the wettest places on Earth — Mawsynram and Cherrapunji regularly top global rainfall charts in June and July. Waterfalls are at their most dramatic, hillsides turn impossibly green, and if you don't mind getting wet, the landscape photography is unmatched.

The trade-off is real, though: root-bridge trails get slippery and river crossings at Nongriat can become genuinely unsafe after heavy rain, several remote roads see landslides, and viewpoints are often fogged in for days at a stretch. We generally steer first-time visitors and anyone doing the Nongriat trek away from July–August specifically, while September (as the rain starts tapering) is a reasonable middle ground for travellers chasing waterfalls without the worst of the risk.

Our Month-by-Month Quick Reference

  • Oct–Nov: Best overall — clear skies, safe trekking, post-monsoon waterfalls still flowing.
  • Dec–Jan: Cool and crisp, occasional Shillong fog, ideal for root bridges and Dawki.
  • Feb–Mar: Fewer crowds, blooming flowers, warming up nicely.
  • Apr–May: Warm, mostly dry, occasional short storms.
  • Jun–Aug: Heavy monsoon — dramatic waterfalls, risky trekking, frequent fog.
  • Sep: Rain easing, greenery at its peak, a good compromise month.

Planning Your Trip

Whichever month you choose, book root-bridge guides and Dawki boat slots in advance during the Oct–Mar peak season, since both get busy on weekends. If you're set on visiting during monsoon for the photography, tell your operator up front so your itinerary avoids the most exposed river crossings.

Our Assam & Meghalaya Classic package is built around the Oct–April window and covers Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Kaziranga in one trip from Guwahati. For the root bridges specifically, see our full Nongriat trek guide.
